Submitted by the Ischua Valley Historical Society (Maggie Fredrickson), here is a list of Veterans who enlisted in the Civil War from the towns of Machias, Franklinville, Ischua, Yorkshire, Farmersville, and Lyndon.
MACHIAS:
GEORGE ALLEN – enlisted in December 1861 in the 105th Infantry. He died of wounds October 1862 at Smoketown and was buried there at the age of 30.
FREDERICK ROSENBURY enlisted November 1862 in the 105th Infantry. He was killed at Bull Run in August 1863 at age 38. He left a widow and 6 children.
JAMES ADAMS enlisted in September 1861 in 21st Ohio. He was a musician and was discharged September 1862. He was 28 years old in 1865.
JAMES VAN SLIKE enlisted August 1862 in the 116th Infantry. He died of disease in New Orleans in April 1863 at age 21. He is buried in Baton Rouge.
NATHAN STARKES enlisted December 1861 in the 94th Infantry. He died at Annapolis April 1865 at the age of 49. He was a prisoner for 6 months. A widow and 3 children were left behind.
B.F.H. ANDREWS enlisted June 1862 at the age of 19 in the 154th Infantry Company D. He died in Libby Prison.
ALSON HAMILTON enlisted October 1863 and served 3 years in the 104th Infantry. He was 23 in 1863.
HENRY NEWTON enlisted November 1861 in 105th Infantry. Died in the hospital November 1862 at the age of 43 and buried in Washington. He left a widow and 8 children.
JACOB VANDENWATER enlisted in February 1861 in the 105th Infantry. He was killed at Bull Run in August 1861 at the age of 21.
GEORGE VELZEY enlisted in December 1861 for 3 years in the 105th Infantry. He lost a limb at Gettysburg.
DANIEL SHAW enlisted October 1861 in the 105th Infantry. He was wounded and discharged October 1863. He was 24 in 1865 and had served a total of 24 months.
ABIJAH S. DILLINGHAM enlisted February 1862 in the 94th Infantry. He died in Annapolis February 1864 and was buried there at the age of 31.
GEORGE JOSLIN enlisted September 1862 in the 44th Infantry. He was killed in Spottsylvania in May 1864. He was 19 at the time of his death.
JOHN SHOOTTA enlisted in the 105 Infantry in November 1862. He died of wounds October 1863 at Smoketown and is buried in Maryland.
JOHN D. STARKS ENLSITED October 1861 in the 100th Infantry. He was a Corporal when he died in Andersonville Prison September 1864 at the age of 22.
DUDLEY PHILLIPS JR. enlisted August 1862 for 3 years in 154th Infantry as a corporal. He was 23 in 1865. He was the son of Dudley Phillips.
RILEY W. MASON enlisted October 1861 in the 3rd Iowa. He was 22 when he died.
DAVID H. CHERRY enlisted November 1861 in the 104th Infantry. He served 9 months and was discharged with a surgical certificate August 1862. He was 49 years old in 1865.
DEXTER MASON enlisted November 1862 in the Missouri Regiment as a sergeant. He had been born in Massachusetts. He served 22 months and was 53 years old. His father was Izace Mason.
GEORGE A. STONEMAN enlisted December 1861. He transferred to the 105th Infantry at the age of 22 in 1865. He had been born in Indiana and served 40 months.
NELSON F. BILTON enlisted in August 1862 for 3 years. He served in the 154th Infantry and also the 3rd Iowa Regiment for a total of 40 months. He was 30 years old in 1865.
DELANO WARREN enlisted in Sept. 1864 in the 188th Infantry. He was discharged June 1865 at age 19. He served 9 months. His father was Lucius Warren.
CARVEL G. STEPHENS enlisted August 1862 in the 154th Infantry. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant at the age f 25 in 1865. His parents were Albert and Lucy Stephens.
GARRETT ABERS enlisted in the 37th Infantry in 1861. He served 22 months and was 48 in 1865.
ANDREW JOHNSON enlisted December 1861 in the 105th Infantry. He served 36 months and was discharged at the end of the term. He was 27 in 1865 and his parents were Richard and Helen Johnson.
NORRIS PHILLIPS enlisted September 1864 in the 188th Infantry. He died at age 19.
JOHN B. JOHNSON enlisted January 1864 in 2 Mounted Rifles. He died at Petersburg on July 1864 at age 21.
ORSO THOMPSON enlisted September 1864 in the 188th Infantry. He was discharged with his company at the age of 19 in 1865. He served 9 months. His parents were Luther and Elmira Thompson.
CHARLES LIND enlisted February 1864 in 2nd New York Rifles. He was 20 in 1865. His parents were John and Amerila Lind.
OLIVER SELZEY enlisted November 1861 in the 104th Infantry for 3 years.
EDWIN ALLEN enlisted December 1861 in the 104th Infantry. He reenlisted in the 94th Infantry in February 1864. He was 27 years old in 1865. His parents were Solomon and Hannah Allen.
BAKER POOR enlisted September 1864 for one year in the 188th Infantry. He was 32 years old in 1863.
DELOS PHILLIPS enlisted August 1862 in the 154th Infantry. He served 21 months and was 32 years old in 1865.
H.E. LOCKE enlisted July 1862 for 3 years in the 154th Infantry. He was 35 years old in 1865. His parents were Chester and Amelia Locke.
SPENCER LIND enlisted September 1864 for one year in either the 185th or 188th Infantry. He was 23 in 1865. His parents were John and Amerila Lind.
OLIVER VESPEY enlisted September 1864. He served one year in the 188th Infantry. He was 22 in 865. His mother was Calista Vespey.
ALEX R. DILLINGHAM enlisted in the 154th Infantry in Company D for 3 years in September 1862. He was 29 years old in 1865.
MERRITT LOWELL enlisted September 1864 in the 188th Infantry. He was discharged in June 1865 at the age of 38. He served 9 months.
ALANSON BARNES enlisted October 1861 and re-enlisted in 1864 in the 104th Infantry. He was a Corporal at the age of 21 in 1865. His parents were Mason and Lucy Barnes.
GEORGE PHILLIPS enlisted August 1862 for 3 years in the 154th Infantry Company D at the age3 of 19.
THOMAS N. BILTON enlisted August 1862 for 3 years in the 154th Infantry Company D. He was 28 years old.
CARTHALO CARVER enlisted in 1863 for 3 years in the Michigan Cavalry. He was 20 in 1865. His father was Sylvester Carver.
C.P. DEAN enlisted April 1864 for 2 years in the Navy. He was 34 in 1865. His parent was J.P. Jackson Dean.
JAMES LINGENFELTER enlisted September 1862 for 3 years in the 154th Infantry Company I. He was 29 years old.
GALEN CHERRY enlisted October 1861 at the age of 17 in the 104th Infantry. He re-enlisted the 2nd New York May 1864. He was 21 in 1865. His parents were David and Nancy Cherry.
DUDLEY PHILLIPS JR. enlisted August 1862 as a Corporal in the 154th Infantry. He was 23 in 1865. His father was Dudley Phillips.
H.L. PATTERSON and NATHANIEL PATTERSON enlisted in the 154th Infantry Company D in August 1862.
HARVEY HALL enlisted September 1861 in the 44th Infantry. He served 36 months. He was 24 years old in 1865.
ELIAS GOULD enlisted for 3 years in the 154th Infantry in August 1862.
MARTIN HIRAM enlisted August 1862 in the 154th Infantry Company D at age 23.
HENRY LITTLE enlisted March 1862 in the 105th Infantry. He served for 3 years and was 36 in 1865.
ALANSON JOSLIN enlisted October 1861. He transferred into the 104th as a wagoner.
NELSON AMES enlisted in the 24th Infantry. He served 19 months and was discharged in 1865 at the age of 24.
FRANKLINVILLE:
JAMES CURTIS - was born September 1842 and enlisted in the 71st Infantry in June 1861. He was wounded at Darlete Gap. He was present at the surrender of General Lee. He was discharged a captain at the end of the war. His parents were Solomon and Sarah (Lyon) Curtis.
ADDISON GARDNER BURLINGAME enlisted June 1861 in the 64th Infantry. He was wounded at Williamsburg and discharged. He lost use of his left arm. He was 26 in 1865. His parents were Selah and Hannah (McClure) Burlingame.
AUSTIN W. ELMER enlisted August 1864 in the Navy. He died of disease and his body was sent home. His parents were James and Harriet (Crosby) Elmer.
MARVIN OLDER was born August 1810 and enlisted October 1861 in the 6th Cavalry. He was wounded at Chancellorsville and taken prisoner. He was sent to Libby Prison. He was released and served in many battles. His parents were William and Harriet (Parker) Older.
THOMAS EFNER MCNALL was born February 1838 and enlisted in the 6th Cavalry. He fought in many battles and was killed at Brandy Station October 1863. His body was sent home to his parents William and Sibbel (Seaward) McNall.
WILLIAM WINTON JR. enlisted in June 1861 in the 64th Infantry. He was wounded at Fair Oaks and died in the hospital. His parents were William and Ophelia (Smith) Winton.
LYMAN HARVEY enlisted in 1861 in the 6th Cavalry. He died in Alexandria, Virginia in August 1863 of disease. His parents were Alexander and Phebe (Shimier) Harvey.
GEORGE EUGENE GROVER was born in 1820 and enlisted in 1862. He was a musician in the 154th Infantry. He was involved in many battles and mustered out in June 1865.
JUDSON LOW was born January 1839 and enlisted October 1861 in the 9th Cavalry. He was a sergeant and was wounded at Gettysburg. He died at Seminary Hospital November 1863 and his remains were sent home. His parents were Ten Eyck and Abigail (Buchanan) Low.
EMORY MOYER was born in 1832 and enlisted in the 154th Infantry in August 1862. He was killed at Chancellorsville May 1863. He was buried on the battlefield. His parents were John and Sally (Winsor) Moyer.
TIMOTHY LEAN was born in Ireland and enlisted in the 6th Cavalry in 1861. He served all through the war. His health was impaired. He was 27 in 1865.
WARREN R. FAY was born in 1819 in Massachusetts. He enlisted February 1864 in the 15th Cavalry. He died in Washington September 1865. His parents were June and Olive (Rice) Fay.
WILLIAM O. LAIDLAW was born in Scotland. He enlisted in august 1864 in the Navy. He was a law student. He served to the end of the war. His father was Robert Laidlaw.
DAVID PHILLIPS enlisted in 1861 in the 6th Cavalry. He was killed at White House, Virginia June 1864. He was buried on the battlefield. His parents were Peter and Lucy (McClure) Phillips.
ORLANDO F. DAY enlisted June 1861 in the 21st Infantry. Her was wounded at Alexandria and died there August 1861. His parents were Joel and Harriet (Marvin) Day.
WILLIAM H. BENEDICT enlisted February 1864 in the 15th Cavalry. He died of inflammation of the lungs March 1864.
GILBERT DILTS enlisted in 1863 in the 154th Infantry. He was a sergeant and was killed in battle in Georgia. He was buried on the field.
BARILLA CORTHELL enlisted August 1862 in the 154th Infantry. He died of disease in 1864 and is buried in Washington D.C.
WILLIAM MORTON OLDER was born March 1846 and enlisted in 1864 in the 15th Cavalry. He served in Shenandoah Valley and was made a captain. He died of starvation in Andersonville Prison August 8th, 1864. His parents were Marvin and Diantha Reynolds Older.
WILLIAM LAWRENCE enlisted in 1861 in the 6th Cavalry. He died at York Pennsylvania from exposure December 1861. His parents were Joseph and Lydia Bennett Lawrence.
AZOR CURTIS WAS BORN April 1840 and enlisted May in the 188th Infantry. He was discharged because of wounds. He re-enlisted in the same company and was at the surrender of General Lee. His parents were Solomon and Sarah Lyon Curtis.
FREDERICK BRONDART enlisted in December 1861 in the 105th New York. He transferred to the 94th Infantry. At the age of 26, in 1865, he lost his left arm. He had been born in Holland to Wessel and Hannah Brondart.
JOHN MCCLURE ENLISTED IN 1861 in the 6TH Cavalry. He was mortally wounded at Winchester and sent homer for burial. His parents were David and Esther Morris McClure.
JOHN MCAFFUM was born in Ireland and enlisted in the 6th Cavalry in 1861. He fought in many battles and was killed at Chancellorsville. He was buried on the field.
WILLIAM W. PHILLIPS enlisted October 1861 as Lieutenant in the 6th Cavalry. He was mortally wounded at Beverly Ford in June 1863 and died several days later. His parents were Peter and Lucy Carpenter Phillips.
RUSSELL LATHAM enlisted August 1864 in the Navy. He died on shipboard in the Tennessee River May 1865. His parents were Joseph and Ally Crosby Latham.
PATRICK MCMAHON enlisted in the 6th Cavalry. He4 died of disease at Alexandria, Virginia and is buried there. His parents were John and Bridget Dillon McMahon.
GIDEON SEARL JR. was born in 1840 and enlisted February 1864 in the 5th Cavalry. He was captured and sent to Anderson Prison. He was exchanged and discharged in June 1865. His parents were Gideon and Susana Howard Searl.
SAMUEL HOWARD enlisted in the Navy in August 1864. He served as a sergeant in Key West on the Huntress. His parents were Plara and Eliza Howard.
HANFORD SEARL enlisted in 1861 in the 86th Regiment. He was wounded and died in the hospital. He was buried at home. He had served in the Peninsula Campaign. His parents were Samuel and Sophronia Burlingame Searl.
LAWRENCE DALLAS enlisted in 1861 in the 15th Cavalry and served one year. He re-enlisted in the 15th Cavalry and served to the close of the war. He was 21 in 1865. His parents were Joseph and Lydia Bennett Dallas.
JAMES WHITE enlisted February 1864 in the 15th Cavalry. He was captured by guerillas and sent to Andersonville. He died of starvation August 1864. His parents were James and Sunnah Burrows White.
JOSEPH LAWRENCE JR. enlisted June 1861 as a Sergeant. He was discharged with a disability at the age of 22 in 1865. His parents were Joseph and Lydia Bennett Lawrence.
CHARLES P. WILLIAMS was born in 1840. He enlisted on a Navy gunboat in august 1864. He substituted for Marshall O. Bond. He died on the gun boat February 1865. His burial is unknown. His parents were Simeon and Prudence Morgan Williams.
WILLIAM WING was born in 1847 and enlisted in February 1864 in the 15th Cavalry. He served in Sheridan’s Campaign and was discharged at the close of the war. His parents were Elnathan and Henrietta Lockwood Wing.
CHARLES FITCH enlisted June 1861 in the 64th Infantry. He served one year and died. His parents were Ephraim and Harriet Smith Fitch.
BUEL REYNOLDS was born in 1842 and enlisted in the Navy in 1864. He died of disease in May 1865. His parents were Jepha and Orinda Moffett Reynolds.
MARVIN G. DAY enlisted in 1862 in the 154th Infantry. He was in the hospital most of the time in poor health. He was 36 in 1865. His parents were Joel and Harriet Marvin Day.
ROBERT EMMET OLDER was born July 1842 and enlisted in June 1861 in the 71st Brigade. He was killed in battle in June 1864 and buried on the field. His parents were Marvin and Diantha Reynolds Older.
MARSHALL O. BOND was born in 1830 and enlisted August 1862 in the 154th Infantry as a lieutenant. He was in the battle of Fredericksburg. He resigned in March 1863. His parents were Ora and Laura Carpenter Bond.
CHARLES P. WILLIAMS, also from Franklinville, was born in 1844. He enlisted in August 1864 and served on a Navy gunboat and substituted for Marshall Bond. He died on the gunboat February 1865. His burial is unknown. His parents were Simeon and Prudence Morgan Williams.
WALLACE HOWARD was born January 1844 and enlisted in the 14th Artillery in 1863. He lost a leg in June 1864 and was discharged. His parents were John and Louise Elwell Howard.
JUSTIN SIMONS enlisted in 1861 in the 106th Infantry. He died during General Sherman’s Campaign in Georgia. His father was Oscar Simons.
FRANKLIN T. SAUNDERS enlisted in 1862 as a sergeant. He served in many battles. He was mortally wounded in the presence of General Early and died. His remains were sent home to his parents Harvey and Sarah Hanford Saunders.
MARSHALL ROGERS was born September 1836 and enlisted in the 104th Infantry in 1861 and was a lieutenant in 1863. He was wounded at the Battle of Stone Mountain in 1863. He was captured at Weldon Railroad and sent to Libby Prison. He was exchanged and returned to service. He was discharged in 1865. His parents were Nathaniel and Lucretia Crittendon Rogers.
EPHRAIM SMITH was born in 1844 and enlisted in the 6th Cavalry in 1861. He was killed at Brandy Station in October 1863. His body was sent home to his parents Joseph and Ophelia Fitch Smith.
LEONARD D. MCCLURE enlisted June 1861 in the 21st Infantry. He served with the 21st and then re-enlisted in the 15th Cavalry. He served until the end of the war. He was at the Peninsular Campaign. He was 33 years old in 1865. His parents were David and Esther Morris McClure.
DALSTON SEARL enlisted June 1861 in the 64th Infantry. He served 3 years and was discharged as a Corporal in 1865. WALTER SEARL enlisted in in August 1861 in the Navy. He served his term. They were both the sons of Almond and Jane Scott Searl.
GILBERT BRIGGS enlisted March 1861 in the 25th Infantry. He re-enlisted in 1864 in the 8 U.S. He served in the Peninsula Campaign. His parents were Allan and Jane McClure Brigg
DAVID ADAMS enlisted in 1861 in the 6th Cavalry and died of disease. He was buried at Alexandria, Virginia. His father was William Adams.
FRANKLIN SQUIRES enlisted February 1864 in the 15th Cavalry. His parents were Edward and Susan Howard Squires.
ALLEN WILLIAMS enlisted in 1862 in the 154th Infantry as a Color Sergeant. He served to June 1865. His parent were Simeon and Prudence Morgan Williams
JOHN WHITNEY enlisted in 1861 in the 6th Cavalry. He was a sergeant. He was discharged because of injuries received in service. He was 35 in 1865.
ISCHUA:
HENRY LOCKWOOD – enlisted in the 27th Infantry in 1862. He was born in Ischua in 1840 to John and Roxanna (Sherlock) Lockwood. He was killed at Gains Mills in June 1862 and was buried on the battlefield.
RANSOM AUGUSTUS CHADWICK enlisted in 1861 and re-enlisted in the Navy in 1864. He was born in 1831 at Gainesville, New York. He was taken prisoner at Plymouth, North Carolina and returned at the end of the War.
EUGENE BURLINGAME enlisted September 1863 in the 147th Infantry. He was born in Ischua in 1841. His parents were Philo and Sally (Dodge) Burlingame. He was wounded at Williamsburg and died July 2nd, 1864. His father went to Washington to bring him home. He died in Ischua.
WILLIS HANCOCK GUILD enlisted August 1862 in the 154th Infantry. His parents were Horace and Rhoda (Parker) Guild. He was killed at Chancellorsville in May 1863 and buried there at age 30. He left a wife and 2 children.
GEORGE THOMAS MORGAN enlisted in the 154th Infantry in 1862. He was born in Lansing, New York to Nelson and Sara M. George. He was wounded at Gettysburg and Lookout Mountain in his hand which made him a cripple. He was a corporal at the age of 28 in 1865.
THOMAS LEARN enlisted in 1861 in the 85th Infantry. His parents were Jacob and Catherine (Moyer) Learn. He was wounded at Fair Oaks and his arm was amputated.
AMES HENRY LACAHO enlisted 1861 in the 85th Infantry. He was born in 1835. His parents were James and Mary (Newell) Lacaho. He died at Yorktown.
BELA COLE CLINE enlisted September 1861 in the 85th Infantry. He was born in Smithfield, New York in 1836. His parents were Joseph F. and Loovia (Bennett) Cline. He was taken prisoner at Plymouth, North Carolina and died August 21, 1844 at Andersonville and buried there. He was 27 in 1865.
EDWIN WASHBURN MALLORY enlisted in 1861 in the 85th Infantry. He was born in 1833 and his parents were Simeon and Sophronia (McNall) Mallory. After 8 months he was taken sick and died in the hospital in Washington at age 24.
CHARLES JUSTUS CALDWELL enlisted in the 13th Artillery in 1864. He was born in Ischua in 1846. He was discharged in June 1865. His parents were Anthony and Sarah (Lockwood) Caldwell.
JAMES H. LAWTON enlisted in 1864 in the 52nd Infantry 2nd Cavalry from Franklinville. He did not return from the war.
RICHARD F. BRISTOL enlisted October 1861 in the 85th and 1st New York Artillery. He was 21 when he died October 1864 at Roanoke Island from sickness. He is buried there.
CYRUS WEBSTER NEWTON enlisted as a Corporal in the 85th Infantry in 1861. He was born in Bingham in 1840. His parents were Jesse and Louise (Bennett) Newton. He was taken prisoner at Plymouth, North Carolina and died in Andersonville in august 1864 at the age of 24.
JONATHON C. SMITH enlisted in 1864 in the Navy on the Ship Undine. He died of sickness in 1864 and is buried on an island in the Tennessee River.
JOHN CONRAD LEARN enlisted in 1864 in the 188th Infantry and Served 10 months. He was 42 in 1865. His parents were Jacob and Catherine (Moyer) Learn.
JAMES WHITMAN LEONARD enlisted in 1861 in the 35th Infantry as a corporal. He was born in Ischua in 1837. His parents were Aleyis and Hannah (Snow) Leonard. He was taken prisoner at Plymouth, North Carolina and died at Andersonville Prison at the age of 26.
RANSOM TERRY enlisted in 1862 in the 154th Infantry. He was born in Ischua in 1832. His parents were Elisha and Almy (Hanley) Terry. He was wounded at Gettysburg on July 1st, 1863. He served 25 months.
SAMUEL MAGEE enlisted in 1861. He was 27 when he died March 1863 of sickness. He is buried at Bellplain, Virginia.
LEVI CASLER PARISH enlisted in 1861. He was born in 1840 to Soloman and Barbara Blazier Parish. He was killed at Rocky Point Virginia and buried at Cedarville.
WILLIAM WALLINGTON BARNARD enlisted as a corporal in 1861 in the 85th Infantry. He was born in Ischua to Ashbel and Abigail H. Stowell Barnard in 1844. He was taken prisoner at Plymouth, North Carolina and died in Andersonville Prison July 19th, 1864 at the age of 19. He was buried there.
JAMES LEARN SHELDON enlisted in 1861 at Elmira in the 85th Infantry. He was born in Cuba in 1837. His parents were Gardner and Sylvia Newton Sheldon. He served for two years and was killed at Plymouth, North Carolina in April 1864. He died as a sergeant at the age of 26.
LEVI L. PEARL enlisted in 1861 in the 6th New York. At the age of 24 he died at Rocky Point, Virginia and is buried in Cedarville.
ELEAZER DENSMORE enlisted in 1861and then re-enlisted in 1863 as a Sergeant in the 85th Infantry. He was born in Ischua in 1837. His parents were William and Emaline Pierre Densmore. He was taken prisoner at Plymouth, North Carolina and Died August 20th, 1864 in Andersonville Prison.
WILLIAM KING enlisted in the 15th Cavalry in 1864. He was born in Franklinville in 1847. His parents were Alnathan and Henriette Lockwood King. He served 19 months and was discharged in August 1865.
CHARLES LYMAN GUILD enlisted in 1862 in the 154th Infantry. He was born in Livingston, New York in 1824 to Horace and Rhoda Parker Guild. He was taken prisoner and died at Andersonville Prison in August 1864. He was a Sergeant and 38 years old when he died.
ALONZO LINDERMAN enlisted 1862 in the 154th Infantry. He was born in 1827 at Ischua. His parents were Nicholas and Rebecca Whitlock. He served nearly three years and was discharged in June 1865.
WILLIAM WHITLOCK enlisted in 1864 in the 188th Infantry. He was 35 years old when he was killed at the Battle of Hatcher’s Run and buried there. He left a widow and 4 children.
RIDCHARD JAMES WRIGHT enlisted in 1861 in the 85th Infantry. His parents were James and Julia Loop Wright. He was taken sick and died the day his company was sent to North Carolina.
JOSEPH MORGAN enlisted in the 154th Infantry in 1864. He was born in Allegany, New York. His parents were John and Mary Smith Morgan. He died in 1865.
HOSEA NAPOLEON CHADWICK enlisted in 1861. He was born May 1835 at Wales. His parents were Hosea and Mary Derby Chadwick.
EDWIN E. OSGOOD enlisted in in the 154th Infantry in 1862. He was born in Ischua in 1838. He was taken prisoner in the Battle at Gettysburg and died in the hospital in Richmond.
MARTIN CRAMER enlisted September 1864 in the 13th Artillery. He was born in 1839 and his parents were Peter and Margaret Springer Cramer. He was discharged in 1865.
